THE THREE AEONS
Thelema divides human history into three vast epochs, symbolized by the Egyptian triad. The Aeon of Isis: matriarchal, earth-based, nature worship—humanity as child at breast. The Aeon of Osiris: patriarchal, the dying-and-rising god, sin-and-redemption—Christianity, Islam, Judaism. The Aeon of Horus, which began in 1904: the Crowned and Conquering Child, sovereign and amoral, whose formula is neither the Mother’s nurturing nor the Father’s sacrificial death but the Child’s radiant, undifferentiated energy.1
| Aeon | Deity | Character | Era |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isis | The Mother | Matriarchal, earth-based | Prehistoric–2000 BCE |
| Osiris | The Dying God | Patriarchal, self-sacrifice | ~2000 BCE–1904 CE |
| Horus | The Child | Sovereign, amoral energy | 1904 CE onward |
THE WAR SCRIPTURE
Liber AL vel Legis (The Book of the Law), received in Cairo, April 8–10, 1904, from the entity Aiwass. Chapter III is the voice of Ra-Hoor-Khuit—Horus in his martial aspect. Its opening verse: “Now let it be first understood that I am a god of War and of Vengeance. I shall deal hardly with them.”2
Verse III.4: “Choose ye an island! Fortify it! Dung it about with enginery of war! I will give you a war-engine. With it ye shall smite the peoples; and none shall stand before you.” Verse III.46: “I am the warrior Lord of the Forties: the Eighties cower before me, & are abased.” The text was written in 1904. The Forties and Eighties became the decades of the Second World War and the Cold War arms race.
Verse III.51: “With my Hawk’s head I peck at the eyes of Jesus as he hangs upon the cross.” Verse III.52: “I flap my wings in the face of Mohammed & blind him.” The Horus current declares open war not against people but against the Osirian religions—Christianity and Islam—as systems. Both are currently at war in the Strait of Hormuz.
Crowley’s New Comment on III.3: “The Great War is a mere illustration of this text. The only nations which have suffered are those whose religion was Osirian, or, as they called it, Christian.” Whether this is prophecy, projection, or a template adopted by those with power is the analytical question that matters.
PARSONS AND JPL
John Whiteside “Jack” Parsons (1914–1952): co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Inventor of GALCIT-53, the first castable composite solid rocket fuel—the technology that powered the Space Shuttle boosters and Minuteman ICBMs. A crater on the Moon bears his name. Simultaneously: head of Agape Lodge, the OTO chapter in Pasadena, operating under Crowley’s direct authority.3
The biographical fact is sufficient. The man who invented the fuel for intercontinental ballistic missiles was a practicing Thelemite who performed sex magick rituals in Pasadena while developing rocket propellant at Caltech. The boundary between occult practice and weapons development was porous from the outset of the American rocket program.
Parsons died June 17, 1952, in an explosion in his home laboratory. Circumstances remain disputed. His magical partner for the Babalon Working—L. Ron Hubbard—went on to found Scientology. Crowley’s verdict on Hubbard, in a telegram to Karl Germer: “Suspect Ron playing confidence trick—Jack Parsons weak fool—obvious victim prowling swindlers.”4
THE BABALON WORKING
January–March 1946. Parsons performed an eleven-day Enochian invocation using the Air Tablet, with Hubbard as scribe. From Parsons’ own account: “The present age is under the influence of the force called, in magical terminology, Horus. This force relates to fire, Mars, and the sun, that is, to power, violence, and energy... This force is completely blind, depending upon the men and women in whom it manifests and who guide it. Obviously, its guidance now tends towards catastrophy.”5
The impasse, Parsons wrote, is broken by the incarnation of another force: Babalon. Babalon derives from the Whore of Babylon (Revelation 17), deliberately respelled. She holds the Cup of Fornication and rides the seven-headed Beast. The “Scarlet Woman” is the living human woman embodying Babalon in partnership with the Beast (Therion/666).
The distinction from the Goddess tradition matters. In the Antediluvian framework—Athirat, the Snake Priestesses of Knossos, Tanit—the feminine divine is sovereign, the creatrix and source. In Thelema, Babalon is powerful but functional: she exists in relation to the Beast. She is the Cup; he is the Wand. She receives; he directs. Where the Goddess tradition honors the feminine as origin, Thelema instrumentalizes her as channel.6
“Every man and every woman is a star.
THE DOUBLE CURRENT
Frater Achad (Charles Stansfeld Jones, 1886–1950) announced the “incoming of the Aeon of Ma’at” in April 1948. His qabalistic framework maps the four Aeons onto the Tetragrammaton: Osiris (Yod), Isis (He), Horus (Vav), Ma’at (final He). Ma’at = Malkuth, the material kingdom, completing cosmic restoration.7
Nema (Margaret Ingalls, 1939–2018) elaborated the double current in Maat Magick: “The martial Horus destroys the crippling remnants of past institutions and philosophies; Maat builds and delineates the shape of our social and individual world-in-formation.” The two aeons are not sequential but concurrent. The Horus current destroys; the Ma’at current builds. They operate simultaneously.
This is directly relevant to the framework of this library. Ma’at—truth, justice, cosmic order—is the operative principle that the war’s actors have abandoned. The Thelemic tradition, read through the double current, suggests that the destruction is necessary—but only if the Ma’at current is active in parallel. Destruction without truth is not the Aeon of Horus. It is simply destruction.
CONTEMPORARY SIGNAL
Thelema provides not a prophecy but a structural template. III.46’s “warrior Lord of the Forties” and the “Eighties cower before me”—the decades of WWII and the Cold War arms race. The “war-engine” of III.4 is built by Parsons at JPL. The Osirian religions attacked in III.51–52 are the religions now at war in the Strait of Hormuz. The question is not whether Liber AL predicted the Iran-US war. The question is whether the template it describes—sovereign nations as instruments of a blind, undifferentiated force tending toward catastrophe—matches the structural dynamics observable on the dashboard.
Parsons himself diagnosed the problem: the Horus force “is completely blind, depending upon the men and women in whom it manifests.” Its current guidance “tends towards catastrophy.” The correction he proposed—the incarnation of Babalon—failed. He died in an explosion. His scribe became a cult leader. The correction was never applied. The blind force continues.
